Introduction of MIM Process

MIM (Metal Injection Molding), it is a method of injection molding by mixing metal powder with adhesive.

Manufacture Process

MIM process is mainly divided into four stages, including granulation, injection, degreasing, and sintering. If necessary, subsequent machining or secondary processing processes such as wire drawing, electroplating can be carried out, etc.

Advantages of MIM process:

– Directly forming parts with complex geometric shapes, usually weight from 0.1 to 200g;

– Good surface finish, high accuracy, and with high mechanical properties no matter product strength, hardness, or elongation;

– Good flexibility in alloying, wide application range of materials, product density of 95%~99%, uniform internal structure, no internal stress and segregation

– High degree of production automation, short production cycle, and can achieve continuous large-scale clean production without pollution.

Which parts are suitable for MIM process?

Although MIM is known as the fifth generation metal forming technology, not all metal parts are suitable for using MIM.

The parts suitable for MIM have the following characteristics:

a. It is more suitable for metal parts with small weight.

b. The MIM process is more suitable for metal parts with small sizes.

c. The typical thickness of MIM parts is 1.0-3.0mm.

d. MIM parts are suitable for complex three-dimensional geometric shapes such as external grooves, external threads, conical outer surfaces, cross through holes, blind holes, recesses, stiffeners, and surface knurling.

Due to the MIM process requiring molds to be made firstly, the MIM process requires metal parts to have economic value only in large quantities production.

Common materials of MIM:

Material Synthetic Components Application
Low alloy steel Fe-2Ni, Fe-4Ni , F-8Ni Various structural components of automotive and machinery industries.
Stainless steel 316L, 430L, 17-4PH Medical devices, Clock parts, Decorative parts
Tool steel M2, SKD11, 4140 Tools cams
Hard alloy WC-CO (6%) Various cutting tools, Clocks parts, Watches
